Did you know that the Food Guide Pyramid is no longer in use? It has recently been switched to dinner plate for easier reference when learning about healthy eating.
The reason for the switch is so people have an easier time associating what they eat with nutritioanl guidelines. The plate shows and suggests that you eat at least half of your plate fruits and vegetables. The other have is filled with a grains and proteins. It is recommended that you consume as many whole grains as possible and make sure your grain consumption is greater than your protein consumption. MyPlate also recommends that you switch your dairy products to fat free or 1% low fat products.
Following the guidelines of the new MyPlate design will put you on the right track to a healthy lifestyle, but is only a start to leading a healthy lifestyle.

Thanks and have a great day!

I love the graphic! So much easier for people to understand and visualize the proportions.
ReplyDeleteChad, Great use of this in a PE class. I taught this in health and would have loved to have it reinforced in the PE class. A lot of my kids hadn't heard about this yet.
ReplyDeleteChad, I think this is a fantastic idea! I like the dinner plate concept because it makes it so much more "real" than the pyramid idea. Kids need to be aware of what they eat, and realize how it affects their learning. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love your idea of using this blog for ur PE class. I really agree tht the plate idea is easier to understand than the pryamid.
ReplyDeleteOur Blue Cross Blue Shield Educator's Health Alliance had contests throughout the year last year ot promote healthy lifestyle habits. For the first one we were sent an actual plate that looked like the one here to help us make good decisions about how much of what types of food went on the plate. I found it helpful to see that visual reminder.
ReplyDeleteChad, I like the website, http://www.choosemyplate.gov/ because it offers excellent information about nutrition, weight management and significant facts about preventing heart disease. Everytime I visit your blog, I look at the plate and realize that I need to work on balancing my intact of the 5 food groups.
ReplyDeleteThe visual is easier to understand, students need a concrete example and this plate graphic is perfect! Thank you for sharing :)
